You know those times in your life where there’s so much going on at one time you can hardly wrap your head around it and find yourself trying to catch your balance over and over again? Yeah, me neither! HA!! Just kidding. I seem to find myself doing this far more often than I would like.
We’ve had a lot of change in our lives lately. Really great change! But change, even when it’s great, can cause you to lose your balance and require you to focus just a little bit harder so you can keep yourself upright. It’s kind of funny explaining it like this, but in reality this is what change can often feel like, even when it’s really great change!
You might have noticed that I haven’t posted in a bit. If you didn’t notice, well – that’s a bummer, but it’s ok! We’ve had a bit of a change in our household and we’ve been working on creating a new balance. What was once our normal, has changed a bit and we’re working on building a new normal, which honestly can be kind of fun!
We’ve got grandkids in our home much more than we used to – something I absolutely love! When they tell you being a gramma is like having your cake and eating it too, they aren’t kidding. It’s one of the best things in life. We’re introducing the kiddos to more foods, getting them involved in chores and gardening and…you guessed it…getting them interested in cooking early!
We (or rather I) have decided it’s time that each of the kiddos get to cook dinner for us adults twice a month. They get to decide what they want to cook – whatever they want – with the requirement that they have to choose a vegetable to cook and can’t leave that part out. We got a couple scowls when that rule was announced, but the excitement of being able to cook dinner for everyone very quickly dissolved the lingering disgust that they had to cook veggies too!
If your wondering when your kids can begin cooking, I say do it now! Kids are never too young to begin cooking. If you’ve got little littles, there will obviously be some tasks they won’t be able to do, like cutting and standing over a hot stove. That’s ok! There are lost of other things they can help with. Here’s a few ideas
- Help you measure ingredients – both solid and liquid
- Scoop up food and put it in a cold pot before it goes on the stove
- Set the table
- Put napkins and trivets on the table
Getting kids involved in making meals is a great way to get them interested in exploring the world of cooking and a very creative way of getting them interested in trying new and different foods. My son, still to this day, raves that my requiring him and his sister to cook one night a week when they were younger is the reason he loves to cook so much today and likes trying different recipes with foods he might not have tried before (this last one is a victory all of it’s own. Believe me!).
With all the changes in our household these past few weeks, I’ve had to take a bit of a step back to decide what I can and want to do with my blog. I started out trying to blog every day and soon realized it just wasn’t feasible for me to do this, so I adjusted it to every couple days. Now that we’ve had some other changes, I’m having to reconsider again how much time I have and what it is that I really want to do and provide through my blog.
My goal, the reason I really started this blog, is to get people interested and excited about cooking. To have fun. To find joy in it. To get curious and adventurous. And I somehow thought that to this I needed to post every day or every other day. But I’m realizing, after having a bit of time to regroup, that I don’t need to follow any prescribed interval for posting. Life happens and sometimes we have to take a step back to see a feasible path forward.
Sooo….after a good little break and some time to regroup and reset, I’m starting again with a new focus and a plan to post one blog and one video a week! I’m super excited about being able to continue connecting with all of you, while also having the time to adjust to our new normal. AND…I’m super excited to begin doing some videos and showing you how fun cooking really can be! If there’s something you’re interested in seeing or making, shout it out in the comments and I’ll add it to the list!
Without any further ado…Here’s to continued fun, good food, super company and great adventures!! And…don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE so you don’t miss anything!
